Start to finish

From the first message to the last letter

Five steps, each one short. You can stop after any of them.

  1. 01

Step 1: You answer a few questions

Where you rent, what happened and how many people live in your home.

  2. 02

Step 2: A person calls you

To confirm the answers and ask for the paper. It takes about ten minutes.

  3. 03

Step 3: A lawyer reads the papers

You hear which date matters most and what your options are, in plain words.

  4. 04

Step 4: We agree on a plan

Advice only, a letter, or representation at court. We put it in writing so you know what we will do.

  5. 05

Step 5: We do the work

Letters, forms, hearings and settlement talks. We tell you when it's done and what to keep.

What it costs

Nothing, if you qualify

The clinic is a nonprofit supported by donations and grants. It does not bill renters for its work.

A court can charge a filing fee, and we help you ask for a waiver. If you owe rent, a deposit, or a judgment, that money is still owed; the clinic's help does not pay it.

Free and not free

  • No charge for advice, letters or forms

  • No charge for representation, if we take the case

  • A court's own fees, which a waiver may cover

  • Rent, damages or a judgment you owe, which stay yours to pay
