Questions
Everything renters ask before they write to us
If yours isn't here, send it with the check and a lawyer will answer.
Qualifying
Who can the clinic help?
Renters in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties whose household income is under the clinic's limit and whose problem is with a landlord.
Does it cost anything?
No fee for the clinic's work if you qualify. A court can charge a filing fee, and we help you ask for a waiver.
I rent a room in someone's house. Does that count?
Often yes. Tell us who you pay and what the arrangement is.
Do you take landlords' cases?
No. The clinic works only for renters, so it never faces a client on the other side.
Court
I have a hearing next week. What now?
Call the same day and have the court papers in front of you. Don't skip the hearing, even if you think you'll lose.
Can you come to court with me?
If we have agreed to take your case, yes. If not, we can still prepare you for what the judge will ask.
What should I bring to court?
The lease, rent receipts, photos, texts and your notice. Bring copies for the judge and your landlord.
Privacy
Will my landlord know I contacted you?
Not unless you ask us to write to them or to appear for you.
Is what I tell you private?
What you tell a lawyer who has agreed to represent you is protected. Before that, please keep details short. The form is not for confidential details.
After you apply
What if you can't take my case?
We say why, tell you what the paper means and suggest one or two places to try.
How fast will I hear back?
A person replies on the next business day. If you have a court date, say so and we move it up.
Still not sure? Send us the paper.
A lawyer reads it and replies on the next business day.
