The check

Four things we check before we say yes

It takes about three minutes. A person reads your answers and calls to confirm, and a no is never final: we tell you why and who else to try.

  1. 01

    You rent your home

An apartment, a house, a room or a mobile home lot. Owners facing foreclosure need a different clinic.

  2. 02

    You rent in our area

Lansing, East Lansing, or elsewhere in Ingham, Eaton or Clinton county.

  3. 03

Your income is under our limit

Roughly twice the federal poverty line for your household size. We confirm it on the phone.

  4. 04

The problem is with your landlord

Eviction, a deposit, repairs or a lease. We don't take cases against roommates or neighbors.

Send your answers

Add what you know. Skip anything you'd rather say out loud.

HoursMon to Thu, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fri, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Please don't send confidential details such as account numbers. We ask for those later, on the phone.

What happens once you send it

Who reads my answers?

A paralegal or a lawyer at the clinic, not a computer. Nobody else sees them.

What if my income is a little over?

Tell us. The limit isn't the only thing we look at, and we may know another program that fits.

What happens if you say no?

You get a reason, what the paper you sent probably means, and one or two places to try next.
